316 Stainless steel is a multi-purpose material and is part of the austenitic stainless steel family. The Type 316 group has a superior resistance to 304 Stainless. The main difference between Types 304 and 316 is that Type 304 has a higher percentage of Chromium, lower percentage of Nickel and has no traces of Molybdenum whereas Type 316 has 2%.
Where 304 & 304H differ is that Type 304H has a higher carbon content which gives it a slight edge on 304 when good mechanical properties are needed at elevated temperature environments.
